Janet's father was William McDonald and her mother was Elizabeth Ferguson. Her paternal grandparents were Charles McDonald and Janet McNidder Robertson. She had a brother and nine sisters, named Charles, Jeanie, Elizabeth, Maggie, Mary, Marion, Agnes, Annie, Marion and Agnes. She was the oldest of the eleven children. She died at the age of 65 in 1936 in Glasgow.
