Elizabeth's father was William McDonald and her mother was Elizabeth Ferguson. Her paternal grandparents were Charles McDonald and Janet McNidder Robertson. She had a brother and nine sisters, named Charles, Janet, Jeanie, Maggie, Mary, Marion, Agnes, Annie, Marion and Agnes. She was the third oldest of the eleven children. She died at the age of 80 in 1955 in Govan.
