William's father was Robert Martin and his mother was Margaret Barr.  His paternal grandparents were John Martin and Margaret Shaw. He had three brothers and seven sisters, named John, James, Robert, Agnes, Mary, Isabella, Margaret, Margaret, Martha and Helen.  He was the sixth oldest of the eleven children.  He died at the age of 8 in 1865 in Kilmarnock.
