Martha's father was Robert Martin and her mother was Margaret Barr.  Her paternal grandparents were John Martin and Margaret Shaw. She had four brothers and six sisters, named John, William, James, Robert, Agnes, Mary, Isabella, Margaret, Margaret and Helen.  She was the third youngest of the eleven children.
