James' father was Robert Martin and his mother was Margaret Barr.  His paternal grandparents were John Martin and Margaret Shaw. He had three brothers and seven sisters, named John, William, Robert, Agnes, Mary, Isabella, Margaret, Margaret, Martha and Helen.  He was the fourth youngest of the eleven children.  He died in 1862 in Kilmaurs.
