Helen's father was Robert Martin and her mother was Margaret Barr.  Her paternal grandparents were John Martin and Margaret Shaw. She had four brothers and six sisters, named John, William, James, Robert, Agnes, Mary, Isabella, Margaret, Margaret and Martha.  She was the second youngest of the eleven children.
