Robert's father was John Johnston and his mother was Isabella Baxter. His paternal grandparents were John Johnston and Julian Gillis; his maternal grandparents were Ronald Baxter and Isabella Erskine. He had two brothers and six sisters, named John, Andrew, Betsy, Isabella, Julia, Isabella, Betsey and Margaret. He died at the age of 31 in 1855.²
