Betsy's father was John Johnston and her mother was Isabella Baxter. Her paternal grandparents were John Johnston and Julian Gillis; her maternal grandparents were Ronald Baxter and Isabella Erskine. She had three brothers and five sisters, named John, Robert, Andrew, Isabella, Julia, Isabella, Betsey and Margaret.
