John was born in 1868 in Kilmarnock.1   John's father was James Doig and his mother was Alison (Alice) McMurran.  His maternal grandparents were John McMurran and Agnes Robertson. He had three brothers and a sister, named George, James, Andrew and Agnes.  He was the third oldest of the five children.  He died at the age of 6 in 1874 in Kilmarnock.
