Margaret's father was Alexander Dobie and her mother was Margaret Henderson.  Her maternal grandparents were Archibald Henderson and Jean Brash. She had six brothers and six sisters, named Alexander, Archibald, Robert, David, Henry, Thomas, Agnes, Helen, Jane, Jessie, Janet and Jessie.  She was the sixth youngest of the thirteen children.
