Archibald's father was Alexander Dobie and his mother was Margaret Henderson.  His maternal grandparents were Archibald Henderson and Jean Brash. He had five brothers and seven sisters, named Alexander, Robert, David, Henry, Thomas, Agnes, Helen, Jane, Margaret, Jessie, Janet and Jessie.  He was the fifth oldest of the thirteen children.
