Janet's father was Alexander Dobie and her mother was Margaret Henderson.  Her maternal grandparents were Archibald Henderson and Jean Brash. She had six brothers and six sisters, named Alexander, Archibald, Robert, David, Henry, Thomas, Agnes, Helen, Jane, Margaret, Jessie and Jessie.  She was the second youngest of the thirteen children.
