  1920 census states born in Indiania, but it was his younger brother Henry who was born there. In the 1910 census, John lists his place of birth as Scotland.

John's father was Walker Cunningham and his mother was Jean Mclaren. His paternal grandparents were James Cunningham and Elisabeth Nisbeth. He had five brothers and a sister, named James, Peter, Henry, Walker, George and Lizzie. He was the fourth oldest of the seven children. He died at the age of 75 on December 18th, 1949 in Ohio.
