Willie's father was James Craig and his mother was Margaret (Maggie) Towers. His maternal grandparents were Michael Towers and Janet Mathie. He had a brother and three sisters, named Jimmy, Janet, Fay and Nan. He was the oldest of the five children. He died at the age of 71 in 1952 in Kilmarnock.
