James' father was Thomas Brown and his mother was Elisabeth Cunningham. His maternal grandparents were Alexander Cunningham and Margaret Mitchell. He had a brother and two sisters, named Alexander, Margaret and Catherine. He was the second oldest of the four children. He died at the age of 52 in 1913 in Kirknewton.
