Catherine's father was Thomas Brown and her mother was Elisabeth Cunningham. Her maternal grandparents were Alexander Cunningham and Margaret Mitchell. She had two brothers and a sister, named James, Alexander and Margaret. She was the youngest of the four children. She died at the age of 57 in 1924 in Mid Calder.
