Ronald's father was John Sommers Baxter and his mother was Janet Law. His paternal grandparents were Ronald Baxter and Isabella Erskine. He had five brothers and three sisters, named John, Baxter, Robert, James, Thomas, Isabella, Mary and Janet. He was the second oldest of the nine children. He died from a stroke at the age of 55 on July 4th, 1881 in Arbroath.³⁴⁵
