William was born on September 3rd, 1770.  William's father was Col William Preston and his mother was Susannah Smith.  His paternal grandparents were Col John Preston and Elizabeth Patton; his maternal grandparents were Francis Smith and Elizabeth Waddi. He had four brothers and seven sisters, named John, Francis Smith, James Patton, Thomas Lewis, Elizabeth, Sarah, Susannah, Mary, Letitia, Margaret Brown and Ann.  He died at the age of 50 on January 29th, 1821.
