Francis Smith was born on August 2nd, 1765 in Botetourt Co., VA.  Francis Smith's father was Col William Preston and his mother was Susannah Smith.  His paternal grandparents were Col John Preston and Elizabeth Patton; his maternal grandparents were Francis Smith and Elizabeth Waddi. He had four brothers and seven sisters, named John, William, James Patton, Thomas Lewis, Elizabeth, Sarah, Susannah, Mary, Letitia, Margaret Brown and Ann.  He died at the age of 69 on May 26th, 1835 in Columbia, SC.
