Mason was born on March 12th, 1844.  Mason's father was James M. Marshall and his mother was Eliza Rush.  His paternal grandparents were William Marshall and Mary C. Banes. He had a brother and three sisters, named Thomas, Margaret, Sara and Rosa E..  He was the fourth oldest of the five children. He had three half-brothers and two half-sisters, named William Abraham, James Phineas, John M., Susan Mary and Hester Ann.  He died at the age of 80 on December 17th, 1924 in Fred & Macie Hammond residence, Martinsburg, WV.  He was buried on December 20th, 1924 in Elmwood Cemetery, Shepherdstown, WV.
