James Phineas was born in September 1830 in Virginia.  James Phineas' father was James M. Marshall and his mother was Margaret M. Stipp.  His paternal grandparents were William Marshall and Mary C. Banes. He had two brothers and two sisters, named William Abraham, John M., Susan Mary and Hester Ann.  He was the fourth oldest of the five children. He had two half-brothers and three half-sisters, named Mason, Thomas, Margaret, Sara and Rosa E..  He died at the age of 76 in 1906.
