He was the second oldest of the nine children. He had five half-brothers and four half-sisters, named Carl Herman Rudolph Cornelius, Carl Alfred, Franz Eugene, Wilhelm August Emil, Carl Rudolph Friedrich, Hermina Rosalia, Maria Colestina, Hennrietta Charlotta and Fredrick Alfred.
