His paternal grandfather was David FitzWalter Hamilton and his paternal grandmother is Margaret Leslie; his maternal grandfather is William Keith and his maternal grandmother was Margaret Fraser. He had three brothers and a sister, named William, Andrew, David and Elizabeth. He was the third oldest of the five children. He had a half-sister named Janet.
