Madog ap was born about 1045.  Madog ap's father was Bleddyn ap Cynfyn and his mother is Haer verch Cillin.  His paternal grandparents are Cynfyn ap Gwerystan and Angharad verch Maredydd; his maternal grandfather is Cynllyn ap Blaidd. He had four brothers and two sisters, named Rhiryd ap, Maredydd ap, Cadwagan ap, Iorweth ap, Gwenllian Vech and Hunydd Vech.  He is the oldest of the seven children.
