Cadwagan ap was born about 1049.  Cadwagan ap's father was Bleddyn ap Cynfyn and his mother is Haer verch Cillin.  His paternal grandparents are Cynfyn ap Gwerystan and Angharad verch Maredydd; his maternal grandfather is Cynllyn ap Blaidd. He had four brothers and two sisters, named Madog ap, Rhiryd ap, Maredydd ap, Iorweth ap, Gwenllian Vech and Hunydd Vech.  He is the fourth oldest of the seven children.
