His paternal grandparents were Charles Skaggs and Lucinda Thompson; his maternal grandfather was James ,Jr. Skaggs and his maternal grandmother is Mary Unknown. He had two brothers and four sisters, named John Thomas, James William, Nancy M., Mary Polly, Eleanor and Rachel Sally. He had seven half-brothers and nine half-sisters, named Charles, John Thomas, James William, Lewis Byron, Stephen, John Tyler, John Thompson, Polly, Nancy, Rachel, Mary, Sally, Eleanor, Mary Lucretia, Susan E. and Jane.-
