Sir John was 21 in 1401 when the post-mortem inquisition of his
Great-grandmother, Isabella, was held; at this time the lands, including
Dudley Castle that Isabella and her husband, Richard, had held since the
death in 1359 of her first husband, were restored to their
Great-grandson, John de Sutton. He now held the manors of Sedgley,
Kinswinford and Rowle-Somery in Staffordshire, and also Himley and Over
Penn in the same county, as members of Dudley Castle. He also held lands
in Tipton and the manor of Prestwood in the forest of Kinver.
