Orlando was born on February 25th, 1827 in Illinois or Ohio. Orlando's mother was Elizabeth C. Cox. His maternal grandparents were Emmer C. Cox and Elizabeth Huff. He had three brothers and four sisters, named Lewis Madden, William M., John Hamilton, Phoebe, Levina, Elizabeth Ann and Sarah Jane. He was the oldest of the eight children.
