His paternal grandparents were Burzelia Johnathan Bailey and Sarah Elizabeth Coen; his maternal grandparents are John William (III) Woolard and Nancy Ann Oglin. He had four brothers and five sisters, named Lloyd Myrl (Slim), Arville Lester, Arthur Clifford, Alfred Allen, Ivahmarie Mellisa, Lois Fern, Waunetta Elizabeth, Sybil Pauline and Dema Nadeen. He is the fifth oldest of the ten children.-
