Margaret was born in 1249 in Tunbridge, Kent, England. Margaret's father was Richard De Clare and her mother was Maud de Lacy. Her paternal grandparents were Gilbert de Clare and Isabella (Marshall) Mareschal; her maternal grandparents were John de Lacy and Margaret de Quincey. She had four brothers and five sisters, named Lord Gilbert, Thomas, Bevis Benet, Robert, Isabel, Rohesia Agnes, Maud, Eglantine and Eleanor. She was the fifth oldest of the ten children.-
