Samuel was born on October 22nd, 1777 in ,Greenbrier,VA. Samuel's father was Samuel Gwin and his mother was Elizabeth Lockridge. His paternal grandparents were Robert Gwin and Jane Or Jean Kinkead; his maternal grandparents were James Lockridge and Isabella Kincaid. He had three brothers and a sister, named James, Robert, John and Ruth Lockridge. He was the oldest of the five children. He had six half-brothers and five half-sisters, named Andrew, Moses, Ephraim J, Alexander, Salathiel, Thompson M, Elizabeth, Isabella, Jane, Margaret and Mary E. He died at the age of 86 in 1863.-
