Mary Ann was born in 1812 in Jessamine County, Kentucky. Mary Ann's father was John Zike and her mother was Susannah Smith. Her paternal grandparents were Jacob "Zeuch" Zike and Katherine Lucinda Avey. She had seven brothers and two sisters, named Jacob, David, James, Henry, John, William, Isaac, Matilda and Hester Ann. She was the oldest of the ten children.-
