Zelma was born on January 8th, 1896 in Monroe County, Indiana. Zelma's father was David Jefferson Shields and her mother was Cordelia Sexton. Her paternal grandparents were James Madison Shields and Martha J. Sciscoe. She had two brothers and three sisters, named James Glen, Noble "Jack", Carrie, Ruth Elizabeth and Mildred Elizabeth. She was the second oldest of the six children. She died at the age of 75 on September 2nd, 1971 in Bloomington ,Monroe Co., Indiana. She was buried in Clear Creek Cemetery, Clear Creek, Monroe Co., Indiana.-
