Mildred Elizabeth was born on September 9th, 1912 in Monroe County, Indiana. Mildred Elizabeth's father was David Jefferson Shields and her mother was Cordelia Sexton. Her paternal grandparents were James Madison Shields and Martha J. Sciscoe. She had two brothers and three sisters, named James Glen, Noble "Jack", Carrie, Zelma and Ruth Elizabeth. She was the youngest of the six children.-
