Her paternal grandparents were Matthew Butcher and Elizabeth J. Grubb; her maternal grandparents were David Shields and Lucy Amanda Vint. She had five brothers and four sisters, named Estel Joseph, Harold Herman, Elmer Dillon, Delmar Duard, Melvin Ira, Oneta, Maude Ellen, Zella Loretta and Zetta Catherine. She was the oldest of the ten children.-
