John was born on June 13th, 1856 in Dodbrooke Devon. John's father was George Steer and his mother was Jane Winter. His paternal grandparents were Henry Steer and Sarah Lowry. He had two brothers named George and James. He was the oldest of the three children. He had five half-brothers and two half-sisters, named George, Charles, Francis, Thomas, Sydney, Agnes and Edith.-
