Fred was born about 1871 in Ecclesfield Yorkshire.1   Fred's father was Steer and his mother was Margaret STEER. He had six brothers and three sisters, named William H, James Ed, Francis, Ernest, Megniald, Edgar, Lydia, Florence and Kate.  He was the third oldest of the ten children.
