Winifred's father was John Henry Steer and her mother was Edith Annie Letts. Her paternal grandparents were John Thomas Steer and Katharine or Catherine Ellen Smith; her maternal grandparents were Walter Letts and Rebecca Shambrook. She had a brother and a sister, named Edward and Marjorie. She was the youngest of the three children. She died at the age of 77 in 1996.
