Katharine or Catherine's father was Henry Smith and her mother was Mary Ann Hunt.  Her paternal grandparents were Thomas Smith and Mary Letts; her maternal grandparents were William Hunt and Edith Purtin. She had five brothers and two sisters, named Henry, Edmund, George, Thomas, Walter, Mary and Sarah.  She was the fourth oldest of the eight children.  She died at the age of 66 in 1928.
