Mary's father was William Hunt and her mother was Edith Purtin.  Her maternal grandparents were John Purton and Elizabeth Vaughan (of Bredon). She had a brother and five sisters, named William, Emily, Louisa, Elizabeth, Louisa and Fanny.  She was the oldest of the seven children.
