Jane was born on July 23rd, 1814 in Petworth, Sussex and her baptism took place there on July 31st, 1814.1  Jane's father was William Steer and her mother was Anne Merriott.  Her paternal grandparents were Thomas Steer and Jane Osborn. She had four brothers named William, George, Thomas and James.  She was the third oldest of the five children.  She died at the age of 74 in 1888.
