Emanuel's father was Thomas Mitchell and his mother was Betty dJoshua Beaven.  His paternal grandparents were Charles Mitchel and Elizabeth; his maternal grandparents were Joshua Bevan and Ann Summers. He had two brothers and four sisters, named Job, Daniel, Anna, Eleanor, Eliza and Eliza.  He was the third youngest of the seven children. He had a half-brother and four half-sisters, named George, Joan, Mary, Jane and Ann.
