Jane's father was Thomas Mitchell and her mother was Mary Usher.  Her paternal grandparents were Charles Mitchel and Elizabeth; her maternal grandparents were William Usher and Mary Alworth. She had three sisters named Joan, Mary and Ann.  She was the second youngest of the four children. She had three half-brothers and four half-sisters, named Job, Daniel, Emanuel, Anna, Eleanor, Eliza and Eliza.
