Matilda Emily was born on January 25th, 1861 in Ballarat. Matilda Emily's father was Joseph CURTHOYS and her mother was Eliza LANCASTER.  Her paternal grandfather is James CURTHOYS and her paternal grandmother was Elizabeth CURTHOYS; her maternal grandparents are Joseph LANCASTER and Ann Eliza COXHEAD. She had four brothers and four sisters, named Joseph Henry, Edwin William, Alfred George, unnamed twin, Lizzie Ellen, Ada Ellen, Alice Maude and Lizzie Edith.  She was the fourth oldest of the nine children.  She died at the age of 32 on May 19th, 1893.
