At Hardings Row in 1881 John & Catherine (69 & 67) back in Neston by 1891 with John H (26) and Edwin (21) "Bridget Lewis" died 18 March 1860 at Hardings Row, Rainford, aged 64. Widow of James Lewis, Collier. Her daughter, Elizabeth Lawley of Hardings Row was in attendance. 1824 Joseph Lewis James was a Coal miner, living in Neston.

In 1871, he was 46 and single, living at Black House, 122 Liverpool Road, Neston with his parents Joseph and Elizabeth.

In 1881, Joseph (56) was at 7 Eccleston St, White Horse, Neston with mother, niech (Elizabeth Houghton) and brother Benjamin, wife Ann and his family.
1836 Anne Lewis 3 Jan 1859, Ann married James Fairhurst 1838 - 1908 Elizabeth Lewis 70 70 In 1861, Elizabeth (23, Unm) was a servant for the Bingham family at 1 Fern Villa, St Helens Road, Prescot.

7 Sep 1863, Elizabeth Lewis (24) of Prescot, Lancashire, daughter of Joseph Lewis, a carter, married Peter Houghton (26), a collier, son of William Houghton (also a collier).

In 1871, Elizabeth Houghton (33), born Neston, was living at Whiston (same as her brother Ben). They had three children.
1841 - 1924 Benjamin (Ben) Lewis 83 83 Benjamin was born at Neston.  Before then his family had lived at Ness.

In 1861, Benjamin (20, Coal Miner) was with his parents at Whiston, Lancashire.

In 1865, Benjamin Lewis (24, Collier) from Eccleston married Ann Holland from Parr (daughter of Peter Holland) at Prescot.  Ann was born 7 Jan 1838.

In 1881, Benjamin and Ann (40 & 43) were living with Benjamin's brother Joseph, mother and family at Ehite Horse, Neston.

In 1901, Benjamin and Ann (60, & 63) were at Audenshaw, Ashton under Lyne

In 1861 there is a Thomas and Martha Lewis family.  Also in 1861, there is this Thomas Lewis, born 1827 in Neston, a Coal Miner, married to Susannah from Staffs and living in Parr, (St Helens), Lancashire with 5 children.

The Other Thomas was born Ness, was the son of Roger (see any census record), and married Martha Smith.

In 1851, William (24) was with his young wife Susannah (19)

In 1862, Thomas and Susannah were witness to William and Catherine's marriage

In 1871 Thomas married an older woman, Hannah Bromley, a widow, daughter of William Mainwaring, with children of her own.

In 1881, Thomas (55) is with an older wife Hannah (60) and son Thomas, so a new wife!

I have a 15cM DNA match with Margaret Shorter.  She is the assumed daughter of Jessica Taylor Lewis.  I also have a 7cM DNA match with Zoe Poreba (both managed by Gavin_Rymill).  She is the assumed daughter of Margharet Shorter.

In 1923, Alice Vera Lewis of 56 Rigby St, St Helens, aged 23, sailed (alone) to Labrador, Canada.

Eunice had a daughter Anne Slater.

There are no Lewis marriages in Neston 1818 +/- 5 (although plenty of Williams).  It appears that Joseph and Elizabeth married in Liverpool.

In 1825 the family lived in Neston. By 1830, they were in Ness (when William was born), and then moved to Little Neston.

In 1841 Joseph and Elizabeth (45 & 43) were in Little Neston with Mary (19), Joseph (16), Thomas (14), William (11), Ann  (5), Elizabeth (2) and Benjamin (3 mo).

In 1851 and 1861 the family were in Whiston (near Huyton, Prescot), Lancashire. The three sons were coal miners.

In 1871, Joseph and Elizabeth were back at Neston with their unmarried son Joseph, but must have soon moved back to Prescot, where both their deaths are registered.
1779 - 1848 Thomas Whalley 69 69 Note: There is another Thomas Whalley, born ca.1800, who was a grocer in Blackburn in 1841 (aged 40) with Ann Eastham (aged 20). Another of same age a weaver and lodger in Over Darwen in 1851 aged 72. 

In 1841, Thomas died in Rainford (registered at Prescot).
1782 Ellen Fyles In 1841, Ellen (59) was a farmer with her son Joseph, a pipe maker and Joseph Heyes (7) at Maggots Nook.

In 1851, James Files (45, probably brother of Ellen) and his wife Hannah had the Brewers Arms at Rainford.  Neighbours were Henry and Martha Smith (Ellen's daughter).

In 1865, Thomas, 54, Widower, Pipe Maker married Mary Rigby, widow, daughter of John Swift.

The Ness and Neston coal mines closed in the mid 1850s and the family moved to Whiston.

In 1851 William (21) and his brother became coal miners at Whiston, Lancashire.

In 1861, William (31, unmaried) is still a coal miner at Whiston living with his parents.

In 1862, William and Catherine married.  Thomas Lewis (William's brother) and his wife Susannah were witness. 
1831 - 1899 Catherine Whalley 67 67 In 1851, Catherine Whalley (19) was the oldest child of Thomas (a pipe manufacturer employing 3 men) and Alice Whalley at Shell House, Rainford.

In 1853, Catherine married Thomas Hayes, from a family of pipe makers.  Thomas's father was John Heyes.

In 1861, Catherine and Thomas were living as the Nags Head in Rainford.  Thomas was the beer-house keeper, although their neighbours were Peter Smith (pipe maker) and James Harrison (pipe manufacturer), and Joseph Lingy was a boarder (pipe maker).

In 1865, Catherine was the daughter of Alice Hayes from Eccleston (father not named) when she married William Lewis, son of Joseph nLewis (both coal miners)

In  1871, Catherine Lewis (4) was with Roger, Mary Heyes (16 & 14), and Joseph and William Lewis (7 & 2) at School Brow, Rainford.
1872 - 1942 Thomas Lewis 69 69 Thomas Lewis is my 2nd cousin 3x removed (with a DNA match to Jessica's son/daughter)

In 1891, Thomas (18) was with his parents at Rainford.

In 1913, Another Thomas and Alice Emma Lewis (born London) imigrated to Toronto, Canada. The 1921 Canada census shows Thomas and Alice (48 & 47) with Wilfred T (22), Evelyn (18), Leslie (17), Edith (14) and Edna (80). The children dont match up! That Alice Emma Charlton Lewis died in Vancouver in 1967.

In 1915, Thomas Lewis, the father of Edward John Lewis was the manager of a yeart company, abode 54 Peter Street, St Helens.

26 Mar 1826, James was also a Pipemaker when he married Ann Standish at Prescot.  They had a son James in 1828 (who later in 1851 was also a pipe maker with his father).

By 1840, James was with Mary and had a son John, baptised at Burnley.

By 1861, James was (54, b.Rainford), a Tobacco Pipe Maker at Burnley, now married to Mary (56, b.Blackburn)

In 1881, Joseph (21, nephew) is with is aunt Ellen Millington (59).

In 1847, Thomas, Labourer was the son of James Millington, a labourer when he marred Ellen Lloyd, dau of John Lloyd a collier.  Both were living at Parr, and Thomas was under age..
