It is significant that the family moved to Marlow, as this is where Henry was after he married in 1848, so perhaps Johns nephew William (Henry's father) was also at Marley. 1822 - 1867 Henry Smith 44 44 Henry Smith is my 2x Great grandfather.

There are 5 Henry Smiths in the 1841 census from Bradford and 1 from Bingley who has a sister Mary, and Henry (15) was living with Jane Seed (45), an Inn Keeper, probably his mother and sister Jane (11) at Sand Beds.

In Oct 1846, "Mr Henry Smith, Bingley" won £3 for best ploughman.

Living at Farsley in 1848 at time of marriage.  John Smith of Sunny Bank, Farsley was recorded on the 1835 poll book (as well as David Smith of Calverley Mill).

In 1851, Henry a labourer & Sarah (27 & 25) are living at Marlow Road, in the Hamlet of Harden, Bingley.  They have Mary (2) and Jane (2 mo).

in 1861, Henry & Sarah Smith (40 & 36) with Mary (11), Jane (10) and William (7) at Lime Kiln, Micklethwaite, Bingley, Yorkshire probably in a house close to the Leeds-Liverpool canel in a village now known as Crossflatts.

In June 1861, they appear to have had a daughter Ann, birth registered in Keighley.  Ann may have survived!

Henry died in 1867 at Cross Flats and Sarah re-married John Foulds two years later.  Was it suicide or did his wife murder him?  See the inquest report in the newspaper. Mary died 4 days after giving birth to William on 29 Jan 1843 1820 - 1845 William Smith 25 25 Jane Seed and her sons William and Henry and daughter Jane were at Sand Beds in 1841.  Jane was an InnKeeper.  There was also Hannah Parkinson (15, servant), possibly related?

William Smith may have married Sarah Wright (25-Nov-51) or
Margaret Taylor (8-Mar-1848), both at Bradford with correct father, but neither of these had Williams father as a Farmer.

William, the Grandson of his mother Jane in 1851 is another. 1798 - 1863 Benjamin Seed 65 65 Benjamin was the son of John Seed from Corehouse, North Bierley, Bradford, a Stuff Maker or Manucacturer (the coarse part of flax).

Benjamin had been married before he maried Jane Smith in 1839, possibly All Lordoff 3-Mar-1829.

Benjamin was a widow when he married Jane in 1839.

Cant find Benjamin on the 1841 census, but Jane was at Sand Beds as an Inn Keeper (with sons William and Henry).  He was a tennant, and also had land to the edge of the river aire (shown on the details of the land auction when Sand Beds was sold by public auction).

Benjamin was at Carr House (a freehold cottage), 226 Brown Royd Hill, North Bierley in 1840, 1842, 1844 and 1858, 1862, 1863 1829 Jane Smith 14 Mar 1830, Jane was baptised at Bingley, the illegitimate daughter (a Widow) of Jane Smith of Sand Beds. (Illegitimate brother Edwin Smith was also born at Sand Beds in 1826).

In 1841, Jane Smith (11) was living at Sand Beds with Henry (15) and her mother Jane Seed (45, Inn Keeper). 1847 William Thomas Smith William Smith was a Grandson of Jane, aged 4 in 1851 and born at her home.

William was a Railway Guars, so travelled.

In 1871, William and Jane (26 & 25) were with Fred (3) and Walther (6 mo) at Hunslet, Leeds.

In 1881, William and Jane (34 & 33) were with Fred (13),  Walther (10), Arthur (5) and William (6mo) at 9 Gaskell Place, Hunslet, Leeds.

In 1891, William Thoams and Jane (44 & 43) were with  Walther (20), Arthur (15) and William (10) at Litchurch, Derby, Derbyshire. 1813 - 1894 Ellis Ratcliffe 81 81 Ellis Ratcliffe is a Farmer from Hainworth. His father is John Ratcliffe, also a Farmer.

Ellis married Mary Smith i31 May 1841, so wan not with his family for the June census.  Ellis Ratcliffe, a Cattle Jobber, and Mary (both 25) we staying at Market Place, Thirsk.

After Mary died, Ellis a widower, married Ann in 1844, but by 1851 he was back with parents shown as unmarried, and with brother William Widow with son William.

In 1844 he was a farmer at Marlow Hall.  The Leeds Intelligencer reported his second marriage on Saturday 23 Nov 1844 thus:  "Tuesday last, at the parish church, Bingley, by the Rev. J. Cheadle, Vicar, Mr Ellis Ratcliffe, of Marlow Hall, farmer and grazier, to Ann, daughter of Mr Thomas Rhodes, of Long-lee, near Keighley."

By 1871, Ellis had moved to live in Headingley, and had four sons Thomas (19), John (17), Rhodes (9) and James (7).

In 1851, John and Mary Ratcliffe (62 & 63) were at Spring Holes, Thornton with sons Ellis and Eilliam (38 & 36) and grandson William (9). Ellis was shown as unmarried and William Widowed, but it should be the other way around (except Ellis had also remaried and was seperated). 1788 - 1861 Mary Rhodes 73 73 In 1851, John and Mary Ratcliffe (62 & 63) were at Spring Holes, Thornton with sons Ellis and Eilliam (38 & 36) and grandson William (9). 1821 John Ratcliffe 1825 Rhodes Ratcliffe 1830 - 1892 Susannah Ratcliffe 61 61 Susannah worked as a domestic servant and was unmarried in 1861, aged 29 (at Huddersfield) and 1881, aged 50 (at Leamington, Warwick) 1832 Abraham Ratcliffe 1814 William Ratcliffe William was missing on the 1851 census, but back with his mother Mary in 1861 1823 - 1869 Ann Rhodes 46 46 Ann's father was Thomas Rhodes, a farmer from Long-Lee, part of Keighley.  The Leeds Intelligencer reported her marriage on Saturday 23 Nov 1844 thus:  "Tuesday last, at the parish church, Bingley, by the Rev. The family came from Clayton, but after Isaac married, he farmed at Allerton, and at the time of his death had accumulated considerable property.

In Isaac's will (Feb 1813) he left his estate to his son William and money in trust for his three grandchildren, John, William and Thomas Smith.

Isaac died at Allerton, but its not clear where his farm was.  His Nephew had the farm at Moorside, and Isaac's may have been Ackroyd Farm (near manningham).

 1759 - 1805 Elizabeth Skirrow 46 46 When Isaac dide, he had 3 cottages "in Cottingley in the Parish of Bingley in the said county now occupied by Joseph Moor, Benjamin Smith and James Wilcock".  These could have been the former properyy of Holdroyd Skirrow (and daughters Elizabeth and Sarah) of Cottingley. 1781 Mary Smith ~1725 William Smith William lived at Clayton, about 1.5 miles south of Allerton until 1758 (where the family later had a farm), although the children were all baptised at Northowram Independant, near Halifax.

After 1858, the family were residents of Northowarm and shown by the baptism: "Priscilla daughter of William Smith Inhabitants of Northowram"

A will of 1806 shows William Smith, Yeoman of Legram's Lane, Bradford, estate under £200.  Legrams Lane joins Clayron Road, so this probably is our William, but his wife (relict) is shown as Sarah.  William mat have married again! ~1725 Mary Wilkinson William Smith & Mary Wilkinhson of Allerton seem the most likely marriage. 1751 - 1818 John Smith 67 67 John was of Clayton when he married Hanna.

Joseph was born at Bence, and then Thomas at Marlow. in 1779.

Sarah, daughter of Jos'h Smith of Cottingley was Buried 1819 at Bingley, aged 14 years. Possible daughter? ~1730 - 1799 Holdroyd (Oldroyd) Skirrow 69 69 ~1730 - 1810 Ann Jennings 80 80 1757 - 1764 Mary Skirrow 7 7 1763 Sarah Skirrow Sarah Skirrow married Samuel Hutton, a clothier, on 1 Jan 1786 at St Wilfred, Calverley. ~1750 Hanna Robertshaw 1803 - 1867 Isaac Skirrow Smith 64 64 Isaac Skirrow Smith (or Skirrow Isaac Smith), son of John Smith, was a farmer at Cottingley.

There appears to be no Isaac Smiths on the 1841 census (Cottingley = Bingley district 5)

In 1851 Isaac had a large farm of 219 acres, employing two servants: Elizabeth Hudson and Thomas Parker.  By 1851 he had "House, Land and Cottages".

In 1861 Isaak Skirrow Smith (58) was farming just 3 acres, and was still with Sarah (62). 1799 - 1864 Sarah Beswick 65 65 1828 - 1864 John Smith 36 36 1795 - 1860 Jenny (Jane) Hudson 64 64 Jane Hudson was born Crooklands 23 Jun 1795, baptised as Jenny Hudson at Preston Patrick, Westmorland 30 Aug 1795). Her parents were Quakers.  Jane's father was Henry Hudson, a farmer.

In 1815, Jane Married William Smith, a farmer from Allerton.

In 1822, 1826 and 1829, Jane had Henry, Edwin and Jane baptised at Bingley.  In 1822, Jane was at Allerton with her husband William a farmer. After he died, she moved to Sand Beds (possibly the Inn) at Morton.

In 1839, Jane Smith (44) and Benjamin Seed (42) a farmer and widower from Carr House, North Bierley are married at Bingley.

1841: Jane aged 45, at Sand Beds (single dwelling), Innkeeper, probably at the Airedale Heifer Inn (not on census) on the Keighley (now Bradford) Road. Her three youndest children, William (20, servant), Henry (13, servant) and Jane (11). There was also Hannah Robinson (15, servant)

1851: Jane Seed aged 55 & Benjamin Seed aged 52 are at Sand Beds with their grandson William, aged 4.  They have 2 female servant girls (Grace Baker and Nancy Woodhead)

13 April 1860, Jane Seed of Sand Beds, East Morton, wife of Benjamin Seed, a farmer and Inn Keeper, died aged 64.  Benjamin (of Sand Beds) was present at the death.. 1783 - 1822 William Smith 38 38 William Smith is my 3x Great grandfather.

Described as Gentleman or Farmer on Family Group Record. ~1755 Mary Hanson 1779 Thomas Smith 1784 William Smith 1809 Thomas Smith 1806 John Smith 1807 William Smith 1779 - 1809 John Smith 30 30 William Smith had a (late) brother, John, refered to in his Will. ~1780 - 1810 Hannah Bennett 30 30 According to the burial, Hannah was from Chellow (which is next to or part of Allerton).  There is no likely marriage for a John and Hannah after 1800.  It appears theefore, John was a minor when he married. 1815 - 1894 Ann Elizabeth Smith 78 78 Ann Elizabeth was at Sand Beds when she married David Lister, a corn miller.  We can be sure this is the correct person as her mother (Jane Smith) was also living at Sand Beds when she remarried Benjamin Seed in 1839.

Ann E and David Lister were Inkeepers from 1841 to 1844, and also, so was her mother Jane & Benjamin.

Ann Elizabeth Lister (75) was with her daughter Mary Ideson (32) in 1891.  She was a farmer.

I also have a strong DNA match (38.4 cgs in 2 DNA segments) to Mike Lister through Ann Smith. 1843 - 1866 William Ratcliffe 23 23 Williams mother died a few days after he was born.

In 1861, William Radcliffe, 18 and born in Bingley was a Butchers Assistant with his "uncle" Edwin Smith, a Butcher at Manchester.

In 1866 William died in Manchester, aged 24.
 1798 - 1848 Edward Smith 50 50 In 1841, Edward, a Stone Mason, and Mary were both 45, living at Royd House (near Marlow), Bingley.  Mary was still there in 1851, but Edward had died.

In 1847, Edward Smith of Royd House died, aged 50 years 1795 Mary Hodgson In 1841, Edward, and Mary were both 45, living at Royd House (near Marlow), Bingley. 

Mary was still at Royd House in 1851, but Edward had died.  Edwin was still with her, now 18, and also there daughters .Catherine and Ann (26 & 21). 1832 - 1890 Edwin Smith 58 58 In 1841, Edwin was aged 9, living at Royd House with Edward and Mary Smith (his assumed parents).  Raven Royd is close to Marlow Hall.

On 7 Aug 1854, Edwin son of Edward (both Stone Masons), married Judith Booth at Keighley.

In 1861, Edwin and Judith (28 & 27) are at Parkes Street, Keighley. Edwin is still a Stone mason.

In 1861, Another Edwin (24) and a butcher, living at 63 Bradford Street, Manchester. He was married to Elizabeth and had his "nephew" William Radcliffe (18) with him as a butcher's assistant.
 1826 Catherine Smith In 1841, Catherine (15) and Ann Smith (12) were Worsted Weavers, living at Royd Field with John Greenwood (35) and William, Thomas and George Smith (6,2,& 3mo). Their parents (Edward and Mary) and brother Edwin (aged 9) were at Royd House.  1830 Ann Smith In 1841, Catherine (15) and Ann Smith (12) were Worsted Weavers, living at Royd Field with John Greenwood (35) and William, Thomas and George Smith (6,2,& 3mo). Their parents (Edward and Mary) and brother Edwin (aged 9) were at Royd House.  1833 - 1890 Judith Booth 57 57 1826 Edwin Smith Edwin was born November 1826 at Sand Beds, the son of Jane Smith.  The father isnt named, but is may be John Smith or maybe Benjamin Seed who Jane later married.  Edwin didnt live with his mother, but instead trained as a Butcher near Leeds, so may have been adopted.

In 1841, Edwin (aged 14) was a Butcher's apprentice in West Leeds.  There were also John and Jane Smith (both 15), Elizabeth (6) and Helen (3).  His mother (Jane Seed) was in Sand Beds with William, Henry and Jane Smith.

On 24 Dec 1849, Edwin married Elizabeth Binns, the daughter of Thomas Binns of Holbeck (near Leeds), a Manufacturer. Edwin was 23 and a Butcher at Manchester. He recorded his father as "John Smith" (which is probably an invention).

In 1851 Edwin and Elizabeth (24 & 29) were at 63 Bradford Street, Manchester (Ancoats). Edwin was a Butcher & ????.

In 1861, Edwin (34) and Elizabeth (32) was a Butcher in Manchester.  He had his nephew William Ratcliffe working with him as an assistant.

In 1871, Edwin and Elizabeth (44 & 48) were still at Manchester. 1829 Elizabeth Binns 1855 John Edward Smith 1860 Sarah Annie Smith D. 1811 Martha Pickles D. >1811 John Pickles In 1811, when wife Martha died, John was a Husbandman at Cottlingley Bridge, late of Bingley. 1880 William Smith 1845 Caroline Smith Caroline Smith may be the daughter of Jane Smith.  The baptism shows her father and Thomas (two years later, there is no father for William Thomas Smith), but the abode is East Morton, which is where Sandbeds is. There does not seem to be a Thomas Smith, Grocer in 1841 or 1851.

Otherwise she may be the daughter of Thomas and Jane Smith (51 & 46 in 185251) of Keighley, a landed proprietor. 1857 - 1858 Susannah Ratcliffe 1 1 1818 John Pickles John was the son of Lydia Pickles, a single woman.  The family were probably from Lowmoor, North Bierley (South of Bradford),

In 1841, John (25) was living with his single mother "Lidy" (50) at Fiddler Hill, North Bierley.

John's mother died in May 1843 and on 6 Aug 1843, John married Susannah Bywater, daughter of Christania Bywater, both bastard children living in the parish of Birstall at St Jame's, Tong (3 miles North of Birstall) 1819 Susannah Bywater 1845 Uriah Pickles 1846 Lavinia Pickles 1840 Ann (Anney) Pickles Ann (or Anney in 1861) was born at Lowmore, South Bradford 1838 Isabella Bywater Its unnlikely Isabella born 1838 is John's daughter.  John was still living with his mother in 1841 and didnt marry until 1843.
