In 1841, John and Elizabeth (both 30) were at Brown Street, Little Bolton.

In 1851, Elizabeth Mather had her mother Martha Gradwell (69) with her and son Edward (15) at 23 Water Street, Little Bolton.  They were at the home of Joseph Mayoh, a spinner from Turton and his wife Hannah (b. Horwich) and family.
1838 - 1841 Charles Mather 3 3 Charles was 4 in 1841, living at Brown Street, Little Bolton.

Charles was at 41 Chapel Street, Little Bolton in 1881, Widower with son James Charles, and Bella Atkinson (domestic servent).  They married in 1883, and by 1891, Charles was a grocer.
1841 - 1844 James Mather 3 3 James was 2 months in June 1841, living at Brown Street, Little Bolton.

James died in June 1844, aged 3.  His father was already dead, so the death record shows only mother Elizabeth Mather.
1808 - 1884 Mary Dawson 76 76 Mary's father was George Dawson, a weaver.

In 1841, Charles, a Beer seller, and Mary (55 & 35) were at Kay Street, Little Bolton With James, Charles and Elizabeth (7, 5 & "months")

After James died in 1849, Mary married Robert Longworth the following year, a Mechnic. The family continued to live in Kay Street.

In 1851, Robert and Mary Longworth (44 & 42) are at 15 Kay Street with 5 of the Mather children.

In 1861, Mary (53) was widowed again, a Provision Dealer at 5 Turton Street (South), Little Bolton, still with Elizabeth and William Mather (21 & 20)

In 1871, Mary Longworth (62) is a Shopkeeper/Provision Dealer at 5 Turton Street, Little Bolton.  Son John (24) also there (24, Labourer at Foundry)

In 1881, Mary Longworth (72 & widow) was a Shop Keeper, aged 72 at 5 Turton Street, Little Bolton with son John (33).
1841 - 1888 William Mather 47 47 William Mather was 10 in 1851, living with his mother and step-father Mary and Robert Longworth.

In 1861, Elizabeth and William Mather (21 & 20) were with their mother Mary Longworth (53, Wid)

In 1864 William Mather may have married Alice YATES at Bolton, St George (Ref: 61/2/185)

In 1891, William Longworth, 51, Widow, born Bolton was in a Bolton logding house.
1842 - 1844 John Mather 1 1 John from Charles's first marriage died in Q3/1842, and another son John (allready on the way) was immediately replaced (named after Charles's father).  However, this John also died (aged almost 2), so in 1847, Charle's next and final son was also baptied John. 1847 John Mather John was 4 in 1851, living with his mother and step-father Mary and Robert Longworth.

In 1881, John (33) stayed in 5 Turton Street, Little Bolton with his mother Mary Longworth (72, a Shop Keeper), after both fathers had died.

In 1897, another John son of Mary and Robert married Martha Haigh in Massachusetts, so this could be him after his mother died.  In 1900, John born March 1847, aged 53 has a 26y old wife Martha and son Robert born Aug 1898.  He is a Meat Cutter in Lawrence, Massachusetts.  However, he had been here 35 years so isnt this John!

31 Dec 1855, Charles Mather (20), Weaver of Halliwell married Sarah Kirkman (23), a spinster.  James Mather married Esther Pasquell the same day, but probably not a closely related double marriage.

First wife Sarah had only recently died (about Jan) when 14 May 1868, Charles Mather, widower, married Jane Hyden Hardman.

In 1866, Charles was a Grocer and Widower when he married Jane Hadrman.  The marriage only lasted three years before Jane died in 1871, aged 26.

In Q1 1872, Charles may have married again, this time to Susannah Nelson, daughter of James Nelson of Little Bolton.

Susannah died in Q1 1881 of in April 1881, Charles (43) was a widow and a Grocer at 41 Chapel Street, Bolton with son James Charles Mather (11) and Bella Atkinson (42, Domestic Servant).

In 1883, Charles married for the fourth and final time.  He married Isabella Atkindon (i.e. Bella his domestic servant) at Bolton RO.

In 1891 Charles and Isabella (53 & 52) were at 21 Hulme Street, Charles still a Grocer. With them was Ann Baron (33), Isabell's daughter from a previous marriage to Joseph Baron.

3 July 1895, Charles Mather of Bolton Lancashire died, leaving effects of £64 to Isabella Mather widow.
1871 - 1871 John Hyden Mather 3m 3m 1844 - 1871 Jane Hyden Hardman 26 26 Jane's father Abraham Hardman was a brewer, so quite handy since Jane's father was a publican.  Her mother's maiden name was Hayden, so later known as Jane Hayden Hardman (or Mather).

In 1871, Jane died, aged only 26, a few months after giving birth to John Hayden Mather.
1869 - 1940 James Charles Mather 71 71 1866 - 1931 Elizabeth Hough 65 65 Elizaberth was the daughter of Ralph Hough, a coal agent 1890 - 1941 Charles Baron Mather 51 51 Charles Baron Mather is assumed to be son (probably first) of James and Elizabeth, as buried with them. 1834 Edward Mather Edward was 6 in 1841, living at Brown Street, Little Bolton.

In 1851, After his father John died (in 1842), Edward lived with his mother and grandmother, Martha Gradwell at 23 Water Street, Little Bolton.

By 1861 Edward had vapourised !

1784 - 1849 Charles Mather 64 64 In 1803, Charles married Alice Lever.  Alice died 1831, and  Charles a Widower married a much younger Mary Roscow in 1833 at St Mary's, Deane.

In 1822, Charles was executor to John's Will, and also witness to Joseph's marriage (1840).

In 1841, Charles (55) was a Beerseller, living at Kay Street, Little Bolton.  With him was his younger wife Mary (35), and James (7), Charles (5) and Elizabeth (9mo).

Recorded as a publican when his son Charles married Jane. He was a Publican in 1870 whe daughter Elizabeth marrried.

Did Charles have a brother John?  John Mather, aged 66, of Kay Street died 27 Feb 1849

Charles died in 1849, and Mary married Robert Longworth at the end of the following year.  In 1851, Mary and Robert Longworth had 5 of the Mather children with them.

After Cherles died, his wife Mary was a Shoipkeeper at Turton Street. This needs more investigation!
1795 - 1875 Richard Mather 80 80 Richard is probably the son of John and Betty Mather from Deane (since he lived in Bolton West and married Betty from Anderton).

In 1841, Richard Mather (45) a weaver, was living in Bengall Square, Bolton.  Wife Betty was 10y older, with Mary (22), Jane (18), and Wright (15).

In 1851, Richard and Betty (55 & 33) were at 35 Bengall Square.  Betty was from Anderton.  Elizabeth Lee (Granddaughter) was with them (and her parents John and Mary Lee at 28 Bengall Square).

1852 Charles Mather Charles son of James Mather, a manufacturer.

13 Jun 1877 Charles Mather, a commercial traveller married Sarah Morris, daughter of Samuel Morris, a gentleman at St George's, Little Bolton.

In 1881, Charles and Sarah were at 30 Haworth St, Little Bolton.

In 1891, Charles (38) and Sarah (36) were in Little Bolton.

Charles and Sarah had been married 33 years in 1911 and had 4 of their 6 surviving children with them (also one had died).
1882 Ada Beatrice Mather 1888 - 1917 Arthur Stanley Mather 28 28 Son of Charles and Sarah Mather, of Wentworth House, 12A, Wentworth Street, Bolton, Lancashire. An old boy of Bolton Grammar School. 1890 - 1918 Charles Muller Mather 27 27 Son of Charles and Sarah Mather, of Wentworth House, 12A, Wentworth Street, Bolton, Lancashire. Formerly a chemist at the Hacken Sewage Works for Bolton Corporation. 1893 - 1962 Oswald Morris Mather 69 69 In 1939, Oswald and Emily lived at 582 Chorley Old Road, and in 1962 when Oswald died.

In 1939, after 10y of marriage, then had no children.

13 Jun 1877 Charles Mather, a commercial traveller married Sarah Morris, daughter of Samuel Morris, a gentleman at St George's, Little Bolton.

In 1881, Charles and Sarah were at 30 Haworth St, Little Bolton.
1880 Gertrude Mather In 1905, Gertrude married William T Roberts at Bolton, Bank Street Chapel (also used by Bertha).

Gertrude was 30 in 1911, and had moved to Blackpool.
1885 Bertha Mary Mather Missing from family by 1901 (presumed recently married Frranz W Moc in 1910) 1834 - 1900 James Mather 66 66 In 1841, son James (7), living with parents and family in Kay Street, Little Bolton.  His father Charles is a Beer Seller.

In 1851, James (17) and siblings living with Robert (step-father) and Mary Longworth (mother).  He married Mary Stott in June.

In 1861, James (27) is a Counterpane Manufacturer with Mary (30)

In 1871, James and Mary (37 & 40) have 7 childrfen, living at 47 Arrowsmith Terrace, Little Bolton. Druggist  manufacturer.

Between 1871 and 1878, there are many articles about James Mather Botanist and Botanic Medicine and "composition powder" published in the Bolton Evening News.

In 1881, James (47) is a Bottanist and Druggist with wife Mary (50) at 48 Arrowsmith Terrace.  With them are Nancy (23), John (20), Louisa (17), Alice (13), Annie (11) and a domestic servant.

In 1891, James (62), James Jnr (24) and Annie (22) sailed from London via Suez and Naples to Victoria, Australia on the Oruba.  Is this them?

In 1891, Alice Mather (24, single) was living at 14 Claremont Street, Birkdale.  Her parents James and Mary (56 & 60) were visitors.  In the 1890s, Louisa, James and Alice all married in Ormskirk.

James may have relocated to Chorlton (were there are matching death records for him and Annie)

In 1901, his wife Mary and daughter Alice A were in Birkdale.
1831 - >1901 Mary Stott 70 70 In 1901, Mary Mather (70, born Bolton) and daughter Alice Bromiley (33), both Wid. 1856 Nancy Mather In 1861, Nancy (4) was living in Little Bolton with parents James and Mary and family.

In 1876, Another Nancy Mather, daughter of James (dec) married Robert Stott at St Peter's, Bolton.

In 1877 Nancy Mather was witness to brother Charles's marriage to Sarah Morris.

In 1881, Nancy (23) was living at 48 Arrowsmith Terrace, Little Bolton with parents James and Mary and family.

Nancy probably married Joseph E Jones in 1883 or Joseph Turnival in 1889 (Bolton RO civil marriages)

In 1891, Nancy and Joseph E Jones (30 & 31) were in Bolton with Norman J H Jones (6) and Edgar A M Jones (3) and Maria Lloyd (16).
1860 John Henry Mather 1862 - 1910 Louisa Mather 48 48 In 1890, had moved to Ormskirk and married Henry Jones 1864 James Mather In 1897,  James married Sarah Lodge at Ormskirk RO. 1867 Alice Ann Mather In 1894, Alice Ann Mather married Herbert Charles Bromley (1869-1896) at Ormskirk RO.

In 1891, Alice Mather (24, single) was living at 14 Claremont Street, Birkdale.  Her parents James and Mary (56 & 60) were visitors.
1869 - 1870 Elizabeth (Annie) Ann Mather 1 1 1858 - ~1863 Sarah Jane Mather 5 5 1805 - 1876 Thomas Mather 71 71 When Nancy was baptised in 1839, Thomas was an over-looker (although a weaver before and after).

9 Nov 1825 Thomas married Margaret "Tinsley"

In 1841, Thomas (weaver) and Margaret (both 30) and Charles (15), Mary (12), William (6), and James (4) were at Bengall Square, West Bolton.  Also present (on the next page so possibly not related) were John Heyes (60) and Sarah Lear (5).

In 1851, Thoma and Margaret (both 50) were still at Bengall Square with Charles (24), Mary (21), William (18), Alice (7) and Elizabeth (4).  Son James was missing, died in 1846  aged 10.

In Nov 1851 when Mary married, Thomas was a Weaver and she was from Halliwell 

In 1871 Thomas (67, Wid) was at 12 Bengall Square with Charles (45) and Alice (25)
1804 - 1871 Margaret Tyldsley 67 67 GRO records show MMN as TYLDSLEY

Possibly the daughter of John and Margaret Tyldsley (or Tyldesley) who were neighbours at Bengall Square in 1841.

In 1825, Margaret Tyldsley (recorded as Tinsley) married Thomas Mather at Bolton.

In 1841, Thomas and Margaret (both 30) were at Bengall Square, West Bolton with three sons (15, 6 & 4) and Mary (12)
1826 - 1883 Charles Mather 57 57 Unmarried aged 45 in 1871, so Charles probably never had children (unless Alice was his) 1829 - 1871 Mary Mather 42 42 30 Nov 1851, Mary (22), daughter of Thomas Mather of Halliwell married Jeremiah Thornley.  Wright Mather was her witness.  Wright was the son of Thomas Mather.  Both families had lived at Bengal Square.

In 1861, Jeremiah and Mary (32 & 31) were living at 9 Bengal Square with their first four children.
1843 - 1896 Alice Mather 53 53 In 1861, Alice (17) was still with her parents (both 60) at 12 Bengall Square, West Bolton

In 1871, Alice (25) was still with her father Thomas (67) at 12 Bengall Square, West Bolton

In 1872, Alice married Samuel Coffey at Bolton Christ Church. No DNA match found though!

1846 Elizabeth Mather In 1861, Elizabeth (15)  was still with her parents (both 60) at 12 Bengall Square, West Bolton 1837 - 1846 James Mather 9 9 1839 - 1840 Alice (Nancy) Mather 1 1 1807 - 1842 John Mather 35 35 John Mather (Weaver) Married Elizabeth at St Mary Deane in 1833.

In 1841, John and Elizabeth, both ca.30 at Brown Street, Little Bolton with Edward (6), Charles (3) and James (2mo).

John died in August 1842 (aged 33 to 35), and his father Charles had his following son baptised Charles later that year.

By 1851, Elizabeth was a widow, living with Edward and her mother Martha Gradwell at 23 Water Street, Little Bolton.
1834 William Mather Another MATHER + KAY family!  William was a Tinplate Worker, son of Thomas Mather a Hand Loom Weaver from Great Lever.  There was another William Mather in Bury, a Brass Worker son of George a Tin Plate worker of about the same age.

In 1851, William (18), son of Thomas and Margaret, was a Tin Plate Worker living at 38 Bengall Square, West Bolton.

24 Sep 1856, William and Betsy Kay marriad at St Michael, Great Lever, and their first children wee born Bolton (Darcy Lever). 

In 1858 they had a son Edward whos birth was registered at Bolton and later that year his death registered at Manchester.

By 1860 they were at New Cross, Manchester where Alice and Ann were born.

In 1861, William and Betsy (27 & 24) were living at 75 Prussia Street, Manchester with SarahAnn (4), Alice (1) and Anna (1 mo)

In 1871, William and Betsy (37 & 34) were still at 75 Prussia Street, Manchester with Sarah A (14), Alice (11), William (5)  and James E (6 mo).

~1780 - 1831 Alice Lever 51 51 1804 Ann Mather The Ann Mather that married James Booth on 16 March 1834 is another.

1810 - 1844 Mary Mather 33 33 Mary was born late in 1810 (as 33 when died)

In 1832, Mary may have married Abraham Nabb.  However, in 1841, Abraham was 30 and Mary 24 (should be 31), so this may be the wrong marriage.

Mary died in 1844 during, or soon after giving birth to John.
Mary "wife of Abraham Nabb" died, aged 33, so the 1841 census age was incorrect.
1807 - >1851 Abraham Nabb 44 44 Abraham was the son of Abraham Nabb, a Calico Printer.

In 1841, Abraham was living in Great Bolton, married to Mary with three children.  They then mpved to Little Bolton, where son John was born (and died) in 1844.

After Abraham's first wife Mary Mather died in 1844, Abraham Nabb married Ann, and they had a son James in 1849.

In 1845, Abraham was a Brewer, living in Little Bolton when he married Hannah Whitehead.

In 1851, Abraham (44) was with wife Ann Whitehead (43) and had Abraham, Nancy, Charles and James.

In 1944, when Edward died, he left an estate worth £21,728 to his sister Emily (in Kent).  It appears she never got the money (or was a big spender), as Emily died a spinster in Banbury Hospital in 1964, leaving only £465.
1839 Elizabeth (Betsy) Mather The only Elizabeth Mather born in Apr 1841, was the Daughter of Charles Mather (a Beer Seller, aged 55).  She was 9 months old at the time of the June 1841 census and living at Kay Street, Little Bolton.  The Elizabeth born Dec 1841 was the daughter of Joshua Mather, a mechanic and later an iron turner.

Betsy was 11 in 1851, living with her mother and step-father Mary and Robert Longworth.

In 1861, Elizabeth and William Mather (21 & 20) were with their mother Mary Longworth (53, Wid)

4 March 1870, Elizabeth Mather (29) daughter of Charles Mather a Publican of Turton Street married Robert Roberts (29) and Engineer
1841 Robert Roberts Robert was the son of Robert Roberts (both engineers).

4 march 1870, Robert Roberts of Peel Terrace married Elizabeth mather of Turton Street, the daughter of Charles a Publican.
1844 - 1844 John Nabb 10m 10m 1878 - 1878 James Charles Mather James Charles was born Little Bolton, the son of Charles Mather and Sarah Morris who married in 1877 (i.e. not Samuel and Ellen) 1858 - 1858 Edward Mather 8m 8m 1836 - 1889 Betsy Kay 52 52 1857 Sarah Ann Mather 1860 Alice Mather 1861 - <1871 Hannah (Ann) Mather 10 10 1830 - 1868 Sarah Kirkman 38 38 Sarah from Halliwell was the daughter of Joshua Kirkman a weaver.

In 1841, Sarah (15) was with her parents Joshua and Sarah Kirkman (50 & 48) nee Bradbury at Old Acres, East Bolton

Charles Mather's first marriage (indexed 4 times, but only one has the correct father), married Sarah Kirkham at Deane in 1855.

In 1861 Sarah's sister Alice Kirkham was living with Charles and Sarah.

1827 - 1895 Jeremiah Thornley 68 68 Jeremiah was the son of Jeremiah and Betty Thornton from Ashton-under-lyne.

In 1861, Jeremiah and Mary (32 & 31) were living at 9 Bengal Square with their first four children.
1843 Samuel Cowley 1865 William Mather 1870 James Edward Mather 1874 Elizabeth Mather 1879 Hannah Mather 1831 - 1881 Susannah Nelson 50 50 In 1851, Susannah (20), a dressmaker, was at 6+7 Nelson Street, Little Bolton, daughter of James and Ellen, a Shopkeeper.

In 1861, Susannah (28) was at 11+13 Hulme Street, Little Bolton, daughter of James, now a Patcher at the Cotton Mill.

Q1 1872, Susanna married Charles Mather at Bolton RO.  This was most probably the Charles son of Charles and Mary, recently widowed.

Sauannah died in 1881, and in 1883 Charles married again for the fourth time.
1838 - 1906 Isabella Atkinson (nee Cowan) 68 68 Isabella was the daughter of John Cowan.

In 1861 Isabella (24) was married to Joseph Baron with 3 children.

7 Nov 1869, Isavella Baron, daughter of John Cowan, married Benjamin Atkinson at St George's, Little Bolton

In 1883, Isabella Atkinson married George Mather.
