Gladys was born in 1897 in Warrington.¹ Gladys' father was Joseph Woodward and her mother was Martha Cliffe. Her paternal grandparents were Joseph Woodward and Maria Wynne. She had a brother and four sisters, named Joseph, Lilly, Edith, Florence and Annie. She was the youngest of the six children.
