Clara's father was James Winterbottom and her mother was Sarah Jane May. Her paternal grandparents were Emanuel Winterbottom and Mary Booth. She had two brothers and four sisters, named Arthur, Wilfred, Mary, Daisy, Ivy and Connie. She was the third oldest of the seven children. She died at the age of 84 on March 13th, 1974 in Cottingley.²
