William's father was John Williams and his mother was Hannah Jones.  His paternal grandparents were Samuel Williams and Ann Millington. He had two brothers and six sisters, named Thomas, John, Elizabeth, Hannah, Catherine, Ann, Mary and Frances.  He was the oldest of the nine children.
